“Mel’s vocals are brilliant and the track ends up sounding like the Stooges fronted by Aretha Franklin.”

— Cam from Before Hollywood

“She has a musical sensibility that goes beyond simply singing the notes, with a natural feel for phrasing and interpretation.”

— Sharny Russell

JAZZ – SOUL – BLUES – QUIRKY CHANTEUSE, Mel Lathouras (she/her), is undoubtedly known as one of Australia’s finest singer-songwriters and performers.

Spending her early twenties soaking up the raw energy of the Brisbane and Melbourne Rock scenes, Mel sang and played keys with Screamfeeder’s Kellie Lloyd in a band called the Warm Guns, sharing stages with seminal groups such as Violent Soho and Urge Overkill.

Known for her vocal prowess, Mel also lent harmonies as BV to many Brisbane rock groups, including Tim Steward, touring as a member of his band.

With degrees in jazz, a career spanning over 15 years, and a gift for funny storytelling, Mel has evolved into an iconic performer who is downright dynamic, raw and honest.

Mel thrives in front of a live audience, taking the stage at QLD’s finest venues such as Brisbane Powerhouse, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, The Tivoli, Brisbane Jazz Club and JMI Live.

Co-founder and singer of a female-led jazz band, Yas Queen, Mel has featured at Brisbane Festival’s renowned Spiegeltent, swing dancing festivals and regional centres.

She has also shared the stage with Uncle Vic Simms, Buddy Knox, Luke Peacock, Danny Widdicombe, Paddy McHugh and the Medics as part of the Painted Ladies at Womadelaide in 2015. The supergroup also performed at the National Victoria Gallery in 2017.

Featuring in Brisbane’s latest regular late-night cabaret variety show at the Tivoli, One Trick Pony Club, Mel showcases the diversity of her talents as a comedic singer - writing and performing sketches for the production.

At the end of 2021, Mel and her partner guitarist Harvey Blues produced and performed in two sell-out shows - ‘A Celebration of Amy Winehouse’ - which involved legendary Brisbane band Blues Arcadia and a line-up of extraordinary singers, including Angela Fabian.

While music and performing are her life, Mel’s true passion is teaching and growing Fearless Singer – a thriving community of people liberating themselves from the fear of singing and performing.

Fearless Singer is not only a singing studio but also hosts online courses and now a podcast.

Known as a phenomenal singer, songwriter, and insightful, hard-hitting, self-reflective lyricist, Mel will be releasing her debut EP of originals in 2023.
